Samsung has been detailing its flexible display technology for a while now, but the idea has advanced enough to require some branding and trademarking to be done. We’ve seen concepts and prototypes like the one in the video below and now the flexible screens from Samsung will be known as Youm.
The Korean manufacturer says that the technology is doable and it’s coming soon. Trademarks were filed for tech names like WAMOLED, FAMOLED, PAMOLED and TAMOLED and the first product is expected to launched in late 2012 or early 2013. The result will be a device with a flexible display, that also has the advantage of being thinner, lighter and unbreakable than its rivals. This could help create flexible watches, foldable smartphones and maybe even tablets shaped as scrolls.
In order to pull this off, Samsung removed multiple layers from displays, particularly glass and other solid materials. Youm only involves 4 layers: Polariser, Encap, Organic Layer and TFT film. The technology should be ready by the end of 2012 and I really can’t wait to see what 2013 will bring us. Will the Samsung Galaxy S IV actually use this technology?
