OmniVision announced this week two new smartphone camera chips: OV16820 and OV16825, that support up to 16 megapixels and are able to do video capture at a 4k resolution. Also known as quad full HD, this capture is supported with 60 fps option on these sensors.

The point and shoot abilities have been thus surpassed and the cameraphones will once again get better, digging deeper into the whole of the entire budget camera segment. The new sensors are built on the high performance 1.34 micron OmniBSI-2 pixel architecture and support emerging standards in high resolution video recording for digital still and video camera markets. The 1/2.3 inch sensors will operate in full resolution at 4608 x 3456 when filming at 30 fps and 4K2K (3840 x 2160) at 60 fps.

When it comes to 1080p video you get 60 fps with extra pixels for electronic image stabilization. Full resolution 16MP burst photography is supported as well, as well as RAW scaling, adequate frame rate, exposure, gain and cropping are programmable through the serial camera control bus interface.
