The Open Handset Alliance picks up another member today with the addition of VisualOn. The Silicon Valley-based company enable rich multimedia experiences on smart phones and will begin contributing to Android with the release of Gingerbread. As a result of their offerings, we can look for more optimized audio and video apps, better streaming, mobile television, and more. VisualOn’s Android solution comes courtesy of VOME (VisualOn Media Engine), an “OpenMAX compliant media framework that is capable of working directly with hardware and/or software multimedia components.” In the case of Android, VOME and VisualOn’s multimedia software stack are optimized for both quality and efficiency for ARM-based processors. Another great feature by having VisualOn in the OHA – faster time to market for handsets.
