Sony Ericsson’s CEO, Bert Nordberg, was recently interviewed by the Wall Street Journal where he spilled a few details on the rumored PlayStation Phone. When pressed about the device, Nordberg said, “…there’s a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere.” And as to why the company has yet to release a smart phone bearing the Playstation branding, he added, “… I haven’t dug into that history, but the future might be brighter“.

Looking into early 2011 and Mobile World Congress, he teases us by saying Sony Ericsson will be making “noise” at the annual conference. While he could be referring to the ANZU/X12 phone we’ve seen recently, the following statement could be what cements the rumor for us.

Regarding launching a gaming-oriented handset, Nordberg says the challenge lies in lawyers negotiating rights with publishers. “I’m very glad that we work with a company like Sony, who actually knows how to do it.” Why bother making a statement like this unless that’s what’s going on back at the headquarters?
