A week from now Samsung will be holding that mighty press conference in London to announce the Galaxy S III flagship phone. We’ve already seen a teaser for the device, plus some leaked pictures of dummy units and hands on video with what looks like a prototype. And now we meet the official chipset of this device, a quad core Exynos.
Known as Exynos 4 Quad, the CPU is a quad core unit with 4 ARM Cortex A9 cores, that can be clocked at 1.4 GHz. This technology is not like the one on the Tegra 3, where the cores’ frequency is scaled simultaneously, so they run at the same speed. Instead Samsung’s solution allows each of the cores to have its own clock speed. Qualcomm is also doing that with the Snapdragon S4 famous chipset that’s present on basically everything these days. The advantage of the new Sammy technology is that it uses 20% less power than the dual core Exynos inside the Galaxy S II.
The Exynos 4 Quad is built using 32 nm transistors, an evolution from the 45 nm ones of the 4210 Exynos generation. The new processor promises a PC-like experience when it comes to graphics, great performance and efficient energy management. These were all detailed by Hankil Yoon, Senior VP of Product Strategy Team, Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business. I really can’t wait to see the result in action!
