Samsung Announces Dual-Core Orion Processor, Arrives in Q4

Samsung has joined NVIDIA, Texas Instruments, and Qualcomm as a company working on dual-core mobile processors.  Dubbed the Orion, Samsung’s new chipset contains a pair of 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 cores, and is capable of 1080p video playback and recording.  And if that’s not cool enough for you, smart phones powered by an Orion can be designed with two displays with support for a third, external display.  Much like Samsung has done for their Galaxy S phones, the Orion will be all about awesome graphics performance.  Consider this: the Orion is capable of delivering 3D graphics at five times the performance of their Galaxy Tab and Galaxy S phones.

Samsung says that the Orion will be available to “select customers in the fourth quarter of 2010”.  We’re going to assume this means their own devices.  However, expect to see this hit “mass production in the first half of 2011”.
