The folks of Engadget recently had the chance to tour Nokia’s facilities in Finland and they got a shot of a Nokia Lumia 900 prototype, that’s shown below. Turns out that the device was designed initially with a curved display, just like the Lumia 800, but along the way the Finnish giant changed its mind.
The Nokia Lumia 920 brings the curved display back, so what actually went wrong with the Lumia 900? People commenting on our source link’s website claim to be in the know and they say that Nokia wasn’t satisfied with the durability of the curved screen and also they had issues with stability, weight and thickness. The Nokia Lumia 900 is still a behemoth of a phone and it could have been even thicker like this. It also appears that if they had adopted that technology the result would have been a handset with a diagonal line that wasn’t stable enough.
The Nokia Lumia 920 suffered some back case design changes to fit the curved screen on board and even the back of the phone is slightly curved, apparently. I expect that they develop the idea even more in the future since to me it seems that implementing a curved display on a device nowadays automatically means bulking it up…
