Fresh after the unveiling of the quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU @1.5GHz, Texas Instruments announced the drool-inducing OMAP5 chip. This processor achieves up to 2GHz in clock speed and this is a quad-core unit we’re talking about. This product follows the OMAP3, seen on handsets like the Droid Pro, Droid 2 and Palm Pre 2 and the OMAP4, that will be available on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

Processing performance will be third times that of the OMAP4, while the average power consumption will be improved by 60%. These quad-cores include two ARM Cortex-A15 cores at 2GHz and two Cortex-M4 cores. What this chipset can do is support up to 3 QSXGA (2560 x 2048) displays running simultaneously.

Also, it can use multiple cameras recording at the same time, so 3D technology shouldn’t be a problem on OMAP5 handsets. Samples will reach manufacturers in late 2011, while phones with such chipsets will be released in mid 2012.
