TWRP 2.4 Adds Impressive New Feature Set

MotoQTWRP

Regardless of what the US Government and the PAC behemoth CTIA would have you believe, choice is a good thing in the wireless industry. And when it comes to having choices for different types of software you want to run on your devices, it is a great thing. TWRP (TeamWin Recovery Project) is one of those options for recovery on many different types of devices, with over 80 being officially supported at this time.

TeamWin has been very supportive of the community, from providing instructions on how to build TWRP for devices they don’t officially support, to actively participating in online and forum discussions assisting users with the usage and porting of TWRP. Their source code is completely open source and doesn’t require that you purchase an app in order to utilize the OpenRecovery scripting functionality, unlike other options available.

As of late, they have been hard at work adding various features that add value and continue to set TWRP apart from the other recoveries. Version 2.4.0.0 brings with it new features like using libtar instead of busybox’s tar implementation for better backup options, exFAT sdcard support, decryption of Samsung TouchWiz encrypted devices, updated ADB sideload functionality, and much more. You can view their site for a full list of supported devices or visit some of the device-specific threads below:

If you spot an official TWRP thread that we’ve left out, please let us know, and we’ll promptly add it in!

xphone_job_list

The Motorola X-Phone takes one step closer to legitimacy today as details of a LinkedIn job posting seemingly confirmed the device. The listing, which has since been yanked down, was for a Senior Director of Product Management, X-Phone, and spelled out various roles. Key among the details were mention of multiple and future products, software updates, and working with carriers on customization.

It’s not as if we weren’t already on board with the project, however we’re more than anxious to learn more. Given Motorola is seeking a Product Manager and not a Project Manager we could soon see a slew of new details. People gotta test these out, right?

Apple vs. The World: A Timeline of cell phone patent disputes (Infographic)

In 2007 Apple released the iPhone and showed the world the power of touch screen smart phones. When it first hit the market, the iPhone was the only device of its kind and Apple enjoyed a dominant position atop the marketplace. Today, the waters are much more crowded and Apple faces stiff competition. Sensing threats to its revenue model from the growth of Samsung and the developments of open source devices like the Google Nexus series, Apple initiated a full scale legal assault.
It all started with a single patent lawsuit filed in 2011. Since that first shot was fired the War for Mobile has gone global, and made more than a few patent lawyers very wealthy.  To see the full extent of Apple’s legal battles, check out the graphic below.

NVIDIA provides back story for Project SHIELD

project_shield_720

NVIDIA has put together a lengthy blog post to detail all the fun and excitement (and stress) that went into creating the new Project SHIELD. We didn’t realize this at the time but this thing has kicking around the minds of NVIDIA staffers for the better part of ten years. Apparently it takes a lot of Kentucky Fried Chicken and a dedicated team of like-minded individuals.

The first prototype, assembled in early 2012, was little more than a game controller fastened to a smartphone with wood. From that crude beginning, NVIDIA’s team of industrial designers sculpted a device that could fit in a user’s hands.

Check out the full blog post to learn how things came together so quickly in the end and to learn how important gaming is to NVIDIA.  You’ll also learn a great deal about what the SHIELD is and what makes it so powerful and awesome. Can we just get a product launch, already?

Also, if you’d like to keep up with the latest and greatest details for Project SHIELD, head to shield.nvidia.com and click on “Notify Me.”

ICS/JB Style Task Manager Now Available for Any ROM

ICSJBTaskManager

One of the biggest changes with the arrival of Android 4.0 is the new way to switch and kill tasks. Commonly referred to as the recent apps menu, users can see all their open tasks with just one click, and then switch to a currently open task with just one more. It has become a normal feature that everyone is used to at this point—except, of course, people who haven’t experienced ICS or JB yet. For many phones, Gingerbread and below is still the only stable OS they have. Thus, they don’t have the awesome new task switcher / killer.

A new app by XDA Senior Member hamzawi along with the rest of AID Team gives any user a simulated ICS or JB task management experience. Initially, this was a paid-only application, but a free version was recently released so everyone can enjoy it. While the paid version obviously has more features, the free version still has all the features you’d expect from a task switcher / killer.

Obviously, one of the biggest feature is switching between tasks and killing unwanted applications. The recent apps screen shows up just like it does in ICS and Jelly Bean, so users can switch at will. Swipe-to-kill functionality works as well, so you can bring up the list, swipe unwated tasks, and switch between tasks like normal. Users can access this task switcher by long pressing search. If you’d rather use the home button, that feature is coming soon, but is not currently included. Also included is a kill-all widget. So if you have a bunch of tasks and don’t feel like swiping them all away manually, a quick press of the kill widget will take care of it for you.

The app may not have the features of more advanced custom task managers, but if you want to enjoy a task switcher that is similar to the beauty and simplicity of what is found in ICS and Jelly Bean, this is the app to try. You can get started by visiting the application thread.

HTC M7 reportedly due March 8 with two color options

htc_7_render

The much-rumored HTC M7 will reportedly arrive on March 8 where it will be made available in two color options, indicates HTCSource. Should the details prove accurate, this means HTC will be release the handset less than three weeks after the February 19 announcement.

In terms of colors, the HTC M7 will come in either black or white/silver options. As the source points out, the design does not necessarily lend itself to two tones and likely means white glass bezel around the display with a silver case along the sides and rear.

As to which carriers will see the HTC M7, so far the top three U.S. providers are seemingly good-to-go with only T-Mobile USA still yet-confirmed.

The early March release dovetails with long-standing rumors of HTC wanting to push out 4-5 million units of the handset.

Oppo Find 5 Unboxed the XDA Way – XDA Developer TV

OppoFind5

Here at XDA, we love devices, and we love to see what we can do with them. We love playing with different devices so much that sometimes we import them from China, like the Meizu MX. In this episode of Unboxing the XDA Way, XDA Elite Recognized Developer AdamOutler unboxes the Oppo Find 5. This device was just released for purchase yesterday in China. This device is quite fast, and the 1080p screen is something to be admired

AdamOutler starts by doing what he does best: tearing the device apart and examining the hardware components. However, there are some drawbacks to this device such as how GPL-compliant kernel source is not yet available. Furthermore, you have to use a special ADB binary to access the device. So check this video out, it is not to be missed.

Check out Adam’s other unboxing Videos:

ZTE reveals 5.7-inch Grand Memo

zte_logo_720

ZTE today introduced the next member of its smartphone stable, the 5.7-inch Grand Mate, at a press event in Hong Kong. Details include Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, a 720p HD display, 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chips, 13-megapixel camera, and microSD card slot. Reportedly, ZTE will officially unveil this model at Mobile World Congress in late February.

While the specs aren’t too shabby, our colleague Stone Ip said the choice of finish on the body didn’t feel as nice as the Grand S’, and the silver bezel made the Grand Memo look worse, but in ZTE’s defense it was a prototype and the design may improve in the retail version. – Engadget
